Course Objectives

At the end of this course the student will understand the gender dimension of the modernization process in Turkey.


Course Content

This course has two aims. First, to ensure that the students are familiar with the range of available empirical researches and studies on Turkey, and secondly, to examine critically and in detail some selected examples.


Course Learning Outcomes

1. The student will comprehend various anthropological and sociological debates about Turkish modernization.

2. The student will locate classical anthropological and sociological readings on Turkish family, marriage, kinship relations, and patriarchal structures.

3. The student will explain the dynamics of family, marriage, kinship, and patriarchy with reference to the conflict between traditionalism and modernization.

4. The student will identify multiple methods of data collection and methodological approaches in the fields of sociology and social anthropology.

5. The student will trace the tension between cultural, ideological and political thinking in the context of Turkish modernization.
