Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to analyse different aspects of consumption practices in contemporary societies. It first outlines the rise of the consumer culture from a temporal and theoretical perspective. Then, step by step, it examines the most frequently explored topics/perspectives (i.e. political consumption, status consumption, sustainability, material culture...). Each week is followed by a week for ‘case studies’ which critically explores how such debates have been problematized in empirical studies. The dynamics of the Turkish consumption fields will be incorporated to the discussions.


Course Content

Overview of theories of consumption from a sociological perspective; consumption and modernity; consumption and postmodernity; consumption in different social and cultural contexts; current trends in consumption; relation of consumption to globalization, commodification, class, race, gender and identfy; political economy of consumption.
