Course Objectives
At the end of this course, students will comprehend multiple conceptualizations of society through the perspectives of classical social theorists, including the thinkers from the Renaissance period till the beginning of the twentieth century, who have been influential in the formation of the discipline of sociology.
Course Content
The overall aim of this course is to examine the emergence of sociological imagination. Accordingly, topics such as the Renaissance, the Reformation, rationalism and empiricism, the theory of natural law, the Enlightenment and the conservative critique of the Enlightenment will be examined. The course will also cover the contributions of the founding figures of the discipline of sociology. The works Vico, Montesquieu, S. Simon and Comte will be examined in order to understand the invention of sociology as the science of society.
Course Learning Outcomes
Student, who passed the course satisfactorily will be able to:
- contrast the differences between commonsensical thought and sociological thought.
- interpret the social world from multiple perspectives.
- make sense of the necessity of social theories to develop a sociological research.
