Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will:

  • Explore theories and case studies related to deindustrialization, innovation-based economies, service-sector shifts, regional disparities, and post-growth strategies.
  • Investigate the spatial consequences of economic transformation, including shifts in labor markets, investment flows, and territorial cohesion.
  • Assess institutional frameworks and governance mechanisms for managing economic restructuring at multiple scales.
  • Develop strategies for inclusive and sustainable regional development, with attention to equity, resilience, and long-term competitiveness.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and explain key concepts and drivers of regional economic restructuring in both developed and developing contexts.
  • Analyze regional economic patterns and transformations using qualitative and quantitative tools of spatial and economic analysis.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of regional development policies and governance structures in responding to economic restructuring.
  • Apply theoretical and practical knowledge to design strategic policy interventions that address economic decline, renewal, and transformation.
