Course Objectives

This course aims to provide students with knowledge of childhood disorders. The focus will be on data collection and analyses techniques, including behavioural and neurophysiological measures. Article analysis will be at the core of the course - this will involve delivery of information about brain imaging techniques, gene-environment interaction, self-report measures, different types of statistical analysis (e.g., path analysis), symptoms of and treatment approaches to disorders.   


Course Content

The aim of this course is to look at psychopathology from a developmental perspective while familiarizing students with the main disorders of childhood.


Course Learning Outcomes

At the successful completion of this course, students are expected to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • Characteristics of common disorders in childhood
  • Diagnostic classification, epidemiology and aetiology of common psychological problems, including autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and conduct disorder
  • Cognitive, behavioural, and physiological research concerning psychological disorders in children 
  • A range of data collection and analysis techniques used in developmental research
