Course Objectives

This course is a broad introduction to the field of psychology. You will explore the major areas in psychological sciences, including the relationship between genes, environment and behaviour, structure and function of the brain, sensation and perception, learning and memory, and thinking and intelligence. The main goal of this course is to expose you to diverse theoretical perspectives and research methods used across the subdisciplines of the field.  


Course Content

An introduction to general theories and methods of psychology; basic concepts and research findings in major areas of psychology, such as perception, learning, cognition and emotion


Course Learning Outcomes

On the successful completion of this course, it is expected that the student demonstrates knowledge and understanding of:

  • Primary objectives of psychology as a science
  • Different research methods used by psychologists 
  • Influential theories and findings to date
  • Major theoretical perspectives, questions and enduring conflicts in psychology
  • Differences between myth, untested assumptions and science-based conclusions
