Course Objectives

Course Objectives

·  To help students understand the definitions, components, and functions of attitudes.

·  To demonstrate whether attitudes are consistent with behavior or not.

·  To introduce students to both traditional and current theories of attitude change, persuasion, and resistance to attitude change attempts.

·  To give students a better understanding of the way attitudes change researchers focus on attitudes (e.g., explicit vs implicit) and attitude change (e.g., single or dual processes).

·  To familiarize students with the factors that influence and determine their own attitudes and changes in attitudes.

·  To demonstrate the application of the theories to social problems by presenting several examples of intervention programs used for the real life problems.


Course Content

The purpose of the course is to provide students with a thorough knowledge of the theoretical and empirical issues involving attitudes and attitude change. A detailed overview of the major attitude change theories will be considered. Students will be required to read classic and current contributions to the literature.


Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the graduate students will be able

·  To understand the definitions, components, functions of attitudes, and the consistency between attitude and behavior.

·  To describe core concepts in the traditional and current theories of attitude change and persuasion.

·  To examine and analyze the distinction between explicit and implicit attitudes.

·  To asses the role of various social psychological concepts on attitude change such as attitude strength, attitude ambigouity, personality factors, message content, source characteristics, and medium.

·  To analyze the impact role of various social psychological factors on resistence of attitude change attempts.

·  To apply attitude change and resistance theories to their own experiences, social issues (problems) around them, and the media.

·  To create an attitude change program by using attitude change and resistance theories.
