Course Objectives

The student will learn,
- In-depth (and differential) definitions of the concepts of mood, emotion, and affect
- How different schools of thought (such as cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic) approach these concepts
- 6 basic emotions and their combinations in relation to psychopathological conditions.


Course Content

The course aims at inquiring the central role of emotions in psychopathological disorders like anxiety and depression. Interface of emotion research and psychopathology will be reviewed by considering psychopathology theories, research on cognition and emotion, and practice of psychotherapy. Besides consideration of the role of emotion in specific Axis I and Axis II disorders in DSM, issues in relation to the conceptualization of emotions, facial expressions, mood regulation, and emotional intelligence will also be covered.


Course Learning Outcomes

The student who satisfactorily pass the course will be able to,
- differentiate between ordinary or symptomatic expressions of emotions related to order or disorder
- lead discussions about psychopathological symptom versus syndrome related to mood, emotion, and affect 
- integrate emotion-related theoretical and practical information in prospective case formulations
