Course Objectives
By the end of the course, the students will
- conduct a meta-analysis and report the results in a scientific format
- explain the benefits and drawbacks of meta-analytic methods
- evaluate and discuss the choice of models for meta-analysis
Course Content
Research methodology, systematic review of literature, extraction and coding of studies, creation of database, analysis of overall effect size mean and variance, estimation of random-effects variance, use of moderators (categorical and continuous) to account for variance, graphical methods of data presentation (funnel and forest plots), detection of bias and methods to combat bias (Egger regression, trim-and-fill), sensitivity analysis, checklists and policy statements for presenting the results of a meta-analysis.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- formulate a research question that is appropriate for a meta-analysis
- find previous research relevant to the research question
- code effect sizes and study characteristics
- choose appropriate statistical model(s) for the data
- correctly analyze and interpret the analysis of the data
- write up the results in the appropriate format
