Course Objectives
? To help students understand why gender issues (such as sexism, manhood, femininty, masculinity, gender stereotypes, domestic violence, sexual harassment, and reactions to sexism) should be examined in the field of Social Psychology.
? To introduce students to both traditional and current theories about gender and sexism.
? To familiarize students with the factors that influence attitudes toward women and men.
? To demonstrate the application of the theories to social problems relevant to women.
Course Content
The psychology of being a male or a female is pursued within a developmental perspective. Gender differences and problems in childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age are considered. Special emphasis is given to exploring the psychological functions and implications of gender stereotypes.
Course Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, the graduate students will be able
? To understand gender, attitudes toward women and men, sexism, manhood, discrimination against women, and reactions to sexism.
? To describe core concepts in the traditional and current theories of gender issues such as sexism.
? To asses the role of various social psychological concepts on attitude change or intervention programs relevant to gender issues.
