Course Objectives

Students are :

to become knowlegeable about the field of media psychology-ıt’s definitions, it’s various domains of study and it’s history and metodology.

To understand the role of stereotypes in media and are able to name consequences

To understand the role of media in agenda setting.


Course Content

The aim of the course is to provide an overview of the core terms used in the study of social psychology of media communication. Some of the main topics to be explained and illustrated will include social knowledge, influence processes, the construction of meaning, and the diffusion of representations. While making the case that the study of media influence cannot be isolated from an understanding of wider social, cultural, political, and economic contexts; the major emphasis will be given on role of the individuals as to how they make sense of the media depending on their own socio-cultural contexts.


Course Learning Outcomes

Students are expected to:

demonstrate an understanding of the field of media psychology.

are able to name important empirical research methods and identify strengths and weaknesses and name fields of application within media psychology .

have knowledge about different media effects, negative and prosocial effects.

 to analyse media products (like advertisements) with regard to their possible social psychological impact .

to identify how media affects individuals and cultures.

to discuss how media can be used for socially constructive purposes..
