Course Objectives

By the end of this course, the students will be able to:

  • understand and explain the basic concepts of psychoanalysis and their relation to thr movies.
  • conduct elementary analyses of cinematic characters.
  • apply the psychoanalytic perspective to evaluate the personalities of movie characters.
  • apply the psychoanalytic evaluation to clinical settings.

Course Content

Application of psychoanalytic and existential personality theories and concepts of Freud, Lacan, Klein, Campbell, and May to numerous typology examples drawn from cinema literature.


Course Learning Outcomes

Upon satisfactory completion of this course, the students will be able to:

  • analyze movie characters from a psychoanalytic perspective.
  • discuss the features of a movie from a psychoanalytic point of view.
  • conduct elemantary analyses of an individual's personality and psychopathology.
  • clinically evaluate an individual's personality and psychopathology using psychoanalytic concepts.
