Course Objectives

The course aims at teaching

  • the importance, position and status of the Middle East in world affairs
  • the reasons for the historical and present importance of the Middle East
  • conflicts, crises and wars in the Middle East especially in the 20th century
  • relations among Middle Eastern countries
  • relations of Middle Eastern countries with Europe, Asia and the US
  • political, economic and social developments within Middle eastern countrries and their effects on the Middle East affairs

Course Content

The course aims to introduce students to the domestic political and socioeconomic processes of the Middle East countries, including the Arab States, Iran and Israel. Emphasis is placed on decolonization, state formation, evolution of the political systems, socioeconomic developments, impact of the military, crisis of legitimacy, social movements, ideology and recent attempts at economic and political reform.

  • to interpret contemporary Middle Eastern developments
