Course Objectives

  • The conceptualisation of international organisations.
  • Assess competing theoretical perspectives on international organisations. 
  • Review the structure, work, and impact of some major international organisation.
  • Relate the work of international organisations to the question of global governance. 
  • For students to research and present case studies of international organisations.

Course Content

This course examines the evolution of international organizations in relation to the developments in the international system, undertaking a comparative study between the various pacts and systems prior to the foundation of the League of Nations , the League of Nations and the United Nations system. The course addresses the relevant international organizations of the post-World War II period and the post-Cold War international system


Course Learning Outcomes

  • To be aware of feminist, liberal, Marxist, and realist approaches to IOs.
  • To possess an understanding of how states use IOs in the governance of their relations with other states.
  • To possess an understanding of the weaknesses of IOs and the limits of their authority and the contradictions of their workings.
