Course Objectives

Students become familiar with one of the most significant philosophical works of 19th century German philosophy, Kant's Critique of Pure Reason.

They develop critical thinking in coming to understand the themes and the central problem of this work.  They develop interpretative skills in reading the text.

They become familiar with the logical arguments and the method in Kant's First Critique.


Course Content

Intensive study of Kants Critique of Pure Reason; the problem of metaphysics and the self-criticism of reason; Kants Copernican turn; the constitutive role of concepts in knowledge; the possibility of synthetic a priori knowledge; the cognitive faculties of the human mind; Kants theory of representation; the questions of the ends, the limits and the vocation of human reason.


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the term, the students will have

*received fundamental knowledge about Kant's notion of critique, knowledge and rationality

*developed research skills

*gained interpretative skills by a close reading of the original text.

*gained in depth knowledge about the arguemnts and methods used in Kantian philosophy.
