Course Objectives
This course is designed to guide petroleum and natural gas engineering graduate students in conducting their individual research studies by acquainting them with the required knowledge, strategies, and experience in doing academic research. Some objectives are to enable students to:
- Understand research terminology and ethical principles
- Gain awareness of scientific research methods to be used in PETE domain
- Critically read published scientific research in PETE
- Construct and conduct research methodologically addressing problems in PETE
- Comprehend how to collect and analyze relevant data
- Deliver effective public research presentations to the scientific community
- Write scientific research proposals and articles to a high academic standard
Course Content
The research methodology, ethical principles and challanges. The elements of the research process within quantitative, qualitative and mixed approaches are presented. Engineering ethical principles, philosophy and issues encountered in mining engineering will be dealth.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Define and explain key research terminology, ethical principles, and academic integrity practices relevant to scientific studies in petroleum and natural gas engineering (PETE).
- Identify and evaluate appropriate scientific research methods applicable to research problems in the PETE domain.
- Critically assess published academic research in PETE, identifying strengths, limitations, and contributions to the field.
- Formulate research questions and hypotheses based on gaps identified in the existing literature and field-specific needs.
- Design and implement a methodologically sound research plan to address a defined problem in PETE.
- Collect, organize, and analyze research data using appropriate tools, techniques, and statistical methods.
- Prepare and deliver professional oral presentations of research findings tailored to academic and technical audiences.
- Write high-quality scientific documents, including research proposals, technical papers, and journal articles, adhering to established academic standards.
