Course Objectives
At the completion of this course participants will be able to:
- Understand the aims of coaching in different coaching settings including recreational, developmental and elite-performance
- Develop a personal coaching philosophy with pedagogical view
- Demonstrate an understanding of the basic theories/principles of teaching and learning in coaching
- Reflect on own and others’ pedagogical practices in coaching
- Analyze the pedagogical practices in coaching
Course Content
Coaching is a complex process that enables learning and development of athletes toward the goal of specific training. This course aims to develop an understanding of pedagogical issues in sports coaching. Pedagogical processes in different coaching context including recreational, developmental and performance settings, will be examined in detail.

Discuss the literature on sports coaching frameworks
Differentiate the aims of sports coaching in recreational, developmental and elite performance settings
Interpret the sports coaching standards
Define the sports coaching effectiveness
State a personal sports coaching philosophy
Evaluate the sports coaching philosophies of others
Relate the sports coaching philosophy, aims and practices
Review the basic theories of learning and instruction
Apply the theories of learning and instruction into the sports coaching setting
Reflect on his/her own pedagogical practices in sports coaching
Evaluate others’ pedagogical practices in sports coaching by considering the theories of learning and instruction
Observe the sports coaching setting by quantitative and qualitative data collection tools to understand the pedagogical practices
Analyze the collected data in the sports coaching setting
Present the observation findings in the sports coaching setting
Review the instructional models in sports setting
