Course Objectives

After completing this course students will (be able to): 1.Understand the relation between physical fitness and wellness, 2.Comprehend the basic anatomy, exercise physiology, exercise psychology, and training theory knowledge, 3.Practice and evaluate the physical fitness tests, 4.Evaluate his/her physical fitness level, 5.Choose correct methods to improve physical fitness based on test results, 6.Practice the methods to improve different aspects of physical fitness,7.Use digital physical activity technologies (i.e. pedometer, heart rate monitor, gps, treadmill, bicycle ergometer), 8.Be a critical consumer of physical education and sport, and 9.Appreciate the physical fitness and healthy lifestyles.

 


Course Content

A study on the concept and components of fitness and wellness. The methods to improve healthy lifestyles and evaluation and improving fitness.


Course Learning Outcomes

Define health, wellness and fitness

Identify the benefits of physical activity for wellness

Identify the components of physical fitness

Evaluate personal level of wellness

Describe the aerobic and anaerobic reactions that provide muscles with energy

Locate the major bones and muscles in human body

Explain how skeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous systems adapt to exercise

Identify the macronutrient components of the human diet and their major functions in the body.

Compare the nutrient and energy intakes of physically active people with their sedentary counterparts.

Examine the theories of exercise motivation

Identify the principles of exercise

Apply health related fitness tests

Relate the fitness tests with the appropriate health-related fitness component

Evaluate the fitness tests for validity and reliability by considering factors related with test, test taker and test environment.

Evaluate personal health-related fitness test results

Decide the reasons beyond personal health-related fitness level by considering reinforcing and predisposing factors.

Create short and long term goals to maintain or improve health-related fitness components

Track personal progress and modify plan as needed

Design a personal exercise program for each health-related fitness components by considering his/her level of fitness and FITT formula

Identify personally meaningful physical activities and sports

Practice physical activities to improve different aspects of physical fitness

Participates in physical activities at least 3 times per week to improve/maintain personal health-related fitness

Examine the motivational factors that influence his/her regular physical activity participation   

Use digital physical activity technologies to evaluate the physical activity intensity, volume and activity setting

Use exer-games (e.g. xbox, wii) and physical activity devices (treadmill, bicycle ergometer) to improve/maintain health-related fitness level

Evaluate the quality of clothing for different physical activities in different environmental settings

Identify safety precautions to be taken when exercising

Select appropriate activities for a warm-up and cool-down period when participating in physical activities

Appreciate physical fitness and healthy lifestyles

Support others’ to participate in physical activities
