Course Objectives

  • To introduce map symbols and to develop the ability to relate the environment to the map in different settings
  • To create an awareness of one’s surroundings and an appreciation of nature
  • To compare requirements of physical fitness and building strategy aiming to increase effectiveness in orienteering
  • To provide opportunities of putting skills acquired into practice in organising an orienteering event 

Course Content

The content of this course includes the principles and practices of orienteering, including map reading, compass use, and route planning, as well as the physical and mental challenges of navigating varied terrain. Students will participate in practical exercises to develop their navigation skills, endurance, and problem-solving abilities.


Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course students will be able to

  • Acquire an understanding of the sport and the basics of training, management and technology involved and how to proceed to extend these skills outside the course
  • Build effective strategies to increase their performance regarding their physical fitness
  • Maintain an appreciation of being in the nature and of an increased physical fitness and wellness 
  • Develop a training program based on individual requirements
