Course Objectives

It is aimed that students attending to this course will gain information on following items:

  • A broad view on musical environment before birth of Jazz,
  • Musical, social and cultural conditions of New Orleans,
  • Elements of Jazz,
  • Important features of the traditional Jazz music.

This course will also help the students to increase their understanding, enjoyment and appreciation of music.


Course Content

The purpose of this course is to teach the art of jazz by giving main examples or studies of classic or modern jazz.


Course Learning Outcomes

Students attending to this course will:

  • Be able to recognize Jazz song forms
  • Be able to compare and contrast Jazz, Blues and Ragtime
  • Know the characteristics of the following and be able to distinguish them: New Orleans music, Swing and modern forms of Jazz
