Course Objectives
The main objective of the course is to prepare the students to mechanical engineering profession at an early stage. The course aims to provide the students:
- A general understanding of major fields of mechanical engineering.
- Knowledge about mechanical engineering curriculum and the content of engineering courses
- Appreciation for engineering ethics.
- Awareness of social concerns in engineering practices.
- Knowledge about professional engineering organizations.
- Review on SI and Customary American Unit Systems, unit consistency, Basic units, Generated units
- How mechanical advantage and efficiency are defined and determined
- Basic principles of scientific computation and engineering solution. How the engineering calculations are output and represented.
- Introduce students to the content of mechanical engineering courses; statics, manufacturing technology, dynamics, strength of materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer
- A preliminary step to engineering design in a team environment.
- Introduce CAD/ CAM using the tools of Autodesk Fusion 360
Course Content
Introduction to mechanical engineering. Demonstrations in Mechanical Engineering department laboratories. Practical work in the machine shop. Workshop safety. Lectures on ethics. Technical trips to various industrial sites.
Course Learning Outcomes
Student, who passed the course satisfactorily will be able to:
- list career paths that a mechanical engineer can take,
- list professional responsibilities of a mechanical engineer considering engineering ethics,
- recognize the need for a lifelong learning and the need to continue to educate him/herself,
- create solid model of an object and knows how engineering calculations can be performed in Autodesk Fusion environment
- acquire skills to use units/dimensions and unit conversion in engineering calculations,
- list mechanical engineering fields.
