Course Objectives
The objective of this course is to equip students with an understanding of research methodology, scientific reasoning, and ethical principles in engineering. Students will learn how to formulate research problems, design and conduct scientific studies, critically evaluate the literature, and communicate results in line with universal standards of academic integrity and research ethics
Course Content
Basic concepts: Research, Research methodology, Scientific method, Logical thinking; Problem identification and hypothesis; Types of research methods; Project proposal; How to conduct a literature survey, how to design a study; How to analyze and present results of a study; How to prepare a manuscript; How the scientific publication system works, Conflict of interest; Plagiarism; Code of ethics in engineering; Research misconduct; Rights and responsibilities of engineers.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Explain the principles of the scientific method, logical reasoning, and research methodology.
- Identify and formulate research problems, hypotheses, and objectives.
- Conduct comprehensive literature surveys and synthesize the current state-of-the-art.
- Design appropriate research methodologies and prepare research/project proposals.
- Analyze, interpret, and present research findings effectively.
- Prepare technical reports and manuscripts in accordance with scientific publication standards.
- Demonstrate effective oral communication skills through seminars and presentations.
- Recognize ethical issues in research, including plagiarism, conflict of interest, and misconduct.
- Apply universal principles of research and publication ethics in academic and engineering practice.
