Course Objectives
•Learn non-traditional manufacturing processes, related tools, machine tools, equipment, ...
•Gain the ability to identify and to compare the non-traditional manufacturing processes.
•Gain the ability to decide on the most appropriate non-traditional manufacturing process(es) for a specific task.
•Make literature survey on the state-of-the-art non-traditional manufacturing applications, prepare a review report (paper) and present the information to the class; thus be aware of recent developments.
Course Content
Classification of non-traditional production (machining and forming) processes. Ultrasonic Machining (USM), Abrasive Jet Machining (AJM), Chemical Machining, Electro-Chemical Machining (ECM), Electric Discharge Machining (EDM), Laser Beam Machinery (LBM), Electron Beam Machinery (EBM), Plasma Arc Machining (PAM). Explosive forming. Electro-magnetic forming. Other non-traditional production processes. (S)

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Define and classify non-traditional production processes: Students will be able to categorize various non-traditional machining and forming techniques.

Explain the principles of specific processes: Students will understand the working principles of key non-traditional methods, including Ultrasonic Machining (USM), Abrasive Jet Machining (AJM), Chemical Machining, Electrochemical Machining (ECM), Electric Discharge Machining (EDM), Laser Beam Machining (LBM), Electron Beam Machining (EBM), and Plasma Arc Machining (PAM).

Describe forming processes: Students will be able to explain the mechanisms behind explosive forming and electromagnetic forming.

Compare and contrast processes: Students will be able to identify the differences and similarities between various non-traditional manufacturing processes, considering their advantages, limitations, and suitable applications.

Select appropriate processes: Students will be able to analyze a given manufacturing task and determine the most suitable non-traditional production process or processes to accomplish it.

Research and analyze: Students will be able to conduct a literature survey on state-of-the-art applications of non-traditional manufacturing, critically evaluate the information, and synthesize their findings into a review report.
