Course Objectives
At the end of the course, the student will learn
- topological surface concept
- basic techniques to construct new surfaces
- invariants of topological surfaces
- classification of compact connected surfaces
Course Content
Topology of subsets of Euclidean space. Topological surfaces. Surfaces in Rn. Surfaces via gluing, connected sum and the classification of compact connected surfaces. Simplicial complexes and simplicial surfaces (simplicial complexes with underlying spaces that are topological surfaces). Euler characteristic.
Course Learning Outcomes
The student should learn basic concepts about topological surfaces, some techniques to construct new surfaces and should be able to compute some basic invariants for classification of surfaces.
