Course Objectives

To introduce students to the wide variety of ecosystems existing in the oceans, their location, structure and functioning, as well as sensitivity to environmental influences, such as circulation dynamics and climate change.


Course Content

Introduction to large ecosystems of the world oceans; Arctic, Pacific, Atlatic and Southern Oceans; Marginal Seas and Estuaries; El Niño Southern Oscillation and North Atlantic Oscillation, influence of physical properties on ecosystem dynamics, influence of climate variability and climate change on ecosystem dynamics.

  • Realize the importance of physical forcings on ecosystem functioning
  • Learn effective way of reading scientific articles
  • Improve presentation skills
