Course Objectives

This seminar is designed for Ph.D. students who concentrate on international relations of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. One of the main aims of the course is to identify the linkages and interactions between domestic politics on the one hand and regional and global politics on the other. Thus, topics such as nationalism or political Islam will be analyzed through their domestic and regional/global dimensions. Another aim of the course is to identify different approaches to the topics at hand. The course, indeed, starts with a general discussion on approaches to the Middle East studies and IR of the Middle East. This focus on theoretical perspectives will also be kept in the discussions of more specific topics listed in the syllabus.


Course Content

This is an advanced seminar designed to encourage a synthesis of national and international issues facing the countries of the region ranging from Morocco to the Persian Gulf. Within this context issues of state formation, democratization, economic development, regional conflicts will be discussed.

By the end of this course, you should have:

 

  • An in-depth understanding of complex issues in politics and international relations of the MENA.
  • An ability to identify and critically discuss different approaches to the issues in the MENA Region.
  • An ability to discuss interlinkages and interactions between domestic, regional and global aspects of MENA issues.
