Course Objectives

This course aims to introduce graduate students (Ph.D. and master's) to the security studies subfield of international relations. It provides a survey of major theoretical approaches by familiarizing students with multiple perspectives on significant debates in the field. In doing so, it targets to broaden their theoretical and analytical tool sets.


Course Content

The course addresses concepts of power, influence and coercion, the nature of diplomatic and strategic behavior, and is organized around the following areas: The state system after World War II; problems of contemporary strategy: The impact of nuclear weapons; the theory of nuclear deterrence; Crisis Management; Limited War; arms control and the stability of Mutual Deterrence; arms limitations and control; Detente: SALT, Mutual Forces Reduction Talks, the CSCE and the INF Treaty.


Course Learning Outcomes

Students taking this course will be able to:

-have a better grasp of theories as analytical tools and how by using such tools people may have different interpretations of the same evidence.

-familiarize themselves with the current developments, and have a better grasp of analysis.

-know how to make good presentations and analyses regarding international events.
