Course Objectives

The course intends to provide the link between design and craft mainly in local and national contexts. The relation of industry with design and craft tradition and small-scale production will be discussed together with the topics as commodification of art and craft and national identity; Do-It-Yourself, home crafts; maker movement, sustainability issues in crafts and design and social innovation.

The course is mainly conducted with discussions on reading material provided for each week, and comprises of two parts; in the first part in class discussions will be made on the reading materials. In the second part, each student is expected to make a presentation on the given reading and the topic. Field trips to local craft neighborhoods and seminars with invited guests will be carried out in the second part as well. For the final assessment, the students are required to prepare a final work on a relevant topic. The topics for final work will be discussed during the last courses of the term and can be a case study on local crafts and design or a critical paper on related issues.
