Course Objectives

This course aims to provide a broad understanding of:

  • The underlying principles and historical context of qualitative research methods and methodology
  • How to choose and creatively use qualitative methods in design research
  • The issues regarding the collection and analysis of data using these methods, including ethical issues, power issues and the role of the researcher in design research

Course Content

State, in sequential order and without resorting to structured sentences, the main topics, issues, concerns, etc. covered in the course, separate individual items with a semi-colon or a full stop; only proper names and words beginning after a full stop should be capitalized.
Underlying principles and historical context of qualitative research; deeper understanding of a range of qualitative research methods; adopting and creatively using qualitative methods in design research; issues regarding the collection and analysis of data using these methods; ethical issues, power issues and the role of the researcher in qualitative research;planning, carrying out and reflecting on fieldwork.


Course Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Develop their research interests into research questions answerable by qualitative research
  • Select qualitative methods appropriate to their research questions and employ them in a creative and reflexive way
  • Develop creative strategies for qualitative data analysis
  • Critically evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of different qualitative methods as employed in design research
