Course Objectives

The objective of the "Latin for Social Sciences" course is to introduce students to the fundamentals of Latin, focusing specifically on the vocabulary, grammar, and syntactical structures necessary for reading and interpreting Latin texts relevant to social science disciplines. By providing a solid foundation in basic Latin, this course will enable students to engage directly with historical, philosophical, legal, and other classical texts that are foundational to social sciences. The course will emphasize Latin language skills in the context of the social sciences, particularly in relation to primary source analysis, academic research, and scholarly interpretation.


Course Content

This course will provide the students with Latin especially for Social Sciences. The knowledge of basic Latin will be required since this course will cover readings of texts.


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

Understand Basic Latin Grammar and Syntax: Demonstrate a basic understanding of Latin grammar, sentence structure, and syntax, including the use of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and pronouns in different cases, tenses, and moods.

Develop Latin Reading Skills: Read and comprehend simple Latin texts related to social sciences, such as excerpts from classical works, legal documents, or early social science writings, with a focus on accuracy and interpretation.

Identify Key Social Science Terminology in Latin: Recognize and understand Latin terms and phrases commonly used in the social sciences, particularly those relevant to history, philosophy, economics, political science, and law.

Translate and Interpret Latin Texts: Translate selected Latin texts into English (or another relevant language) while maintaining the integrity of the original meaning, and provide interpretations based on the social science context.

Analyze Historical and Philosophical Texts in Latin: Engage with classical texts in their original Latin form, critically analyzing them in relation to social science concepts and theories, and understanding their influence on modern social scientific thought.

Apply Latin Knowledge in Research: Use basic Latin language skills to access and interpret primary sources in the social sciences, including historical documents, legal texts, or philosophical treatises, and incorporate this analysis into academic research.

Understand the Role of Latin in Social Sciences: Understand the historical significance of Latin in the development of social sciences, recognizing its continued relevance in reading foundational texts and contributing to scholarly discussions in the field.

Develop Academic Writing Skills: Communicate Latin translations and interpretations effectively in written form, ensuring clarity, coherence, and correct usage of Latin terminology and social science concepts.

Cultivate an Appreciation for Classical Language: Develop a broader appreciation for the importance of Latin as a historical and academic language, recognizing its value for deeper engagement with classical texts and social science scholarship.

Through this course, students will acquire the essential Latin language skills required for reading, translating, and interpreting key texts in the social sciences, enhancing their capacity to engage with primary sources and advancing their academic research.
