Course Objectives

-Complexities of writing history

-Professionalization of history

- Major themes in history-writing

- The role of narrative and analysis in history-writing

-  An awareness related to the ideological /cultural biases of historian in writing history


Course Content

This course is an overview of the various theoretical approaches to the study of history. The emphasis will be given to recent and novel ways of understanding, interpreting and explaining both the past and the present. Selected material, preferably essays which build their analyses on comparative historical explanations, will be used to illustrate new theoretical approaches. An assessment of the utility, i.e., strengths and/or weaknesses, of these contemporary approaches will conclude the requirements of the course.


Course Learning Outcomes

Students are expected to be aware of major difficultuies and complexities in writing history. Once that self-awareness is maintained students will acquire the necessary skills to overcome those difficulties and write their PhD dissertations according to universal standards and with a deep concern of objectivity.
