Course Objectives

By the end of the semester, the students are expected

  • to increase and deepen their knowledge in modern world history
  • to have an analytical understanding of interactions among world historical patterns
  • to develop knowledge on economic developments at the global level
  • to gain an insight for world-wide historical developments to be used in their fields
  • to be provided with a historical context within which specific histories take place

Course Content

World history from the 16th century to the 20th with a new world outlook including longue durée; analytical and critical examination of economic, social and political developments in modern world history; in-depth analyses of historical patterns of the interactions among states, societies and historical capitalism as a context in which specific historical works can be placed; scientific, political and economic revolutions and their impact on individuals, societies, lives and cultures; imperialism and the struggle for world hegemony in the 19th and 20th centuries; 20th century world history as the historical heritage of the past five centuries.


Course Learning Outcomes

Students are expected to be able to make in-depth analyses of historical patterns and interactions in modern world history, and to have knowledge and skills to make comparative analyses for their own historical problems, research and specific historical works within the context of world history.
