Course Objectives

By the end of the course, the students will;

Know the period for the initiation and the scope of modernization in the Ottoman Empire,

Identify the impact of modernization on the institutional and political structure, and on the army,

Know the importance of the land system for the administrative, economic and social structure of the Ottoman Empire,

Explain the changing patterns of foreign relations of the Ottoman Empire during the period that the course covers. 

 


Course Content

The course covers the phases of Ottoman modernization starting from the mid-18th Century with particular emphasis to social developments. The course includes the analysis and comparative study of historical developments in various phases of Ottoman modernization.


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the students will be able to:

Compile an essay on the steps of modernization in the Ottoman Empire,

Identify the period and scope of modernization in the Ottoman Empire,

Demonstrate the impact of the modernization on the Ottoman state apparatus, institutions, society, administrative, land, and military systems,

Identify the changing patterns in Ottoman foreign policy and relations.
