Course Objectives

By the end of this course,

The students will know the emergence of press and publication activities started in the Ottoman Empire

The students will comprehend the effects of the press and publishing activities in Europe on the emergence of press and publication in the Ottoman Empire.

The students will know the socio-political ideas that emerged in the 19th-century Ottoman Empire.

The students will understand how these 19th-century socio-political ideas were expressed and discussed in the Ottoman press.

The student will comprehend the role of these ideas conveyed via the press and the press in transforming Ottoman society.


Course Content

The aim of the course is to explore the historical development of the mass media in the Ottoman Empire, vis-à-vis the Western experience. Due emphasis will be given to main lines of socio-political thought in the Empire in the 19th century as they have appeared and been debated in the media


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, the Students should be able to;

Know when and how the press and publication started in the Ottoman Empire,

Analyze the significant impact of European influences on the emergence of press and publication in the Ottoman Empire.

Describe the socio-political ideas that emerged in the 19th-century Ottoman Empire.

Remember the discussions of socio-political ideas in the Ottoman Press.

Evaluate the impact of these ideas and the major contributions of the press and publications in transforming Ottoman society.
