Course Objectives

  • To introduce students to theoretical perspectives on Middle Eastern social and economic history.

  • To analyze major economic and social developments in the Middle East from 1800 to 1920.

  • To examine the economic policies and modernization efforts of the Ottoman Empire and their effects on Middle Eastern societies.

  • To explore the relationships between social structures, economic changes, and political transformations in the region.

  • To develop critical research and analytical skills for evaluating primary and secondary sources related to Middle Eastern economic history.


Course Content

The course is designed to analyze modern Middle Eastern history and economic developments in the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries. The first step in the course is to introduce various theoretical approaches to the Middle Eastern social and economic understanding. Next, the course will refer to specific histories of some of the Middle Eastern societies with reference to the socio-economic developments in the Ottoman Empire until the end of the First World War.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

Understand and apply key theoretical approaches to Middle Eastern social and economic history.

Identify and analyze major economic and social changes in the Middle East between 1800 and 1920.

Evaluate the role of the Ottoman Empire in shaping the socio-economic landscape of the Middle East.

Assess the effects of modernization, industrialization, and economic policies on different Middle Eastern societies.

Conduct independent research on socio-economic developments in the Middle East using historical sources and analytical frameworks.
