Course Objectives

  • To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the historical foundations of contemporary affairs in the Indian sub-continent.

  • To explore the impact of colonialism, independence movements, and nation-building processes in the region.

  • To examine the role of historical memory in shaping modern political and social structures.

  • To develop critical analytical skills in assessing historical sources and their relevance to present-day policy decisions.

  • To foster a comparative perspective on the historical experiences of different nations within the sub-continent.


Course Content

This course is designed to give the graduate students a general perspective on history of the Indian sub-continent in a thematical way in order to understand the profound historical dynamics shaping the minds of the contemporary policy-makers of the sub-continent. The field of the study of the course covers the present-day countries of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

Analyze key historical themes that have shaped modern India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka.

Evaluate the effects of colonialism and post-colonial nation-building in the region.

Identify and assess the historical roots of contemporary political and social issues in the sub-continent.

Develop a nuanced understanding of how historical narratives influence present-day policymaking.

Conduct independent research on historical developments and their impact on contemporary affairs in the region.
