Course Objectives
To give the students an introduction to the main historical issues that have contemporary relevance. In doing so, also to give the students of social sciences a firm grasp in the culture and history of Medieval Europe. Furthermore, the course aims to provide students with the ability to better contextualize Europe in the broader context of world history.
Course Content
Medieval Europe and religions, political institutional development: A survey of Europe in the middle ages with special emphasis on Christianity and its religions, political and educational institutions (Papacy, Feudalism, Universities) from the dissolution of the Western Roman Empire to the emergence of absolute royal states.
Course Learning Outcomes
Developing an understanding of what distinguishes the Middle Ages from the Classical Age. Acquiring a better understanding of Christianity and Islam and their role in world history. Becoming well-versed in the transformations experienced in Europe on the road to modernity.
