Offered Semester:Fall or Spring Semesters.

Course Objectives

  • To understand the basics of the wave theory.

  • To have full grasp of the acquisition and processing of seismic reflection data

  • To get acquainted with sequence stratigraphic principles.

  • To acquire skills to interpret seismic data to recognize the major geological structural types and sedimentary settings.

  • To be familiarized with the hydrocarbon basin types.

  • To be able to map and identify hydrocarbon prospect types.

  • To carry out prospect evaluation and risk assessment process.

Course Content

Basics of seismic wave propagation. Seismic reflection acquisition and processing. Seismic expression of geological structures. Hydrocarbon basin and trap types. Structural and structural interpretation. Prospect evaluation exercise involving structural mapping, prospect identification and risk assessment.

Course Learning Outcomes

The course is designed for students who are involved in research in hydrocarbon geology, structural geology, sedimentology, sequence/seismic stratigraphy, and hydrocarbon exploration and development.

Upon completing the course, you will have developed a notion of

•recognizing hydrocarbon prospects on seismic data,

•assessing the probability of discovering hydrocarbons,

•financial investment and reward associated with the hydrocarbon prospects.
