GENE471 ENDOCRINOLOGY

Course Code:2190471
METU Credit (Theoretical-Laboratory hours/week):3 (3.00 - 0.00)
ECTS Credit:5.0
Department:Molecular Biology and Genetics
Language of Instruction:English
Level of Study:Undergraduate
Course Coordinator:Assoc.Prof.Dr. TÜLİN YANIK
Offered Semester:Fall Semesters.

Course Objectives

To basic concepts, current state of knowledge and constantly evolving developments in mammalian endocrinology with emphasis on humans. It also emphasizes the rapidly emerging discipline of molecular and cellular endocrinology that is revolutionizing our concept of how hormones, growth factors etc. initiate signal transduction at a transcriptional level.

Course Content

A comprehensive course covering the major endocrine systems in animals at the cellular and molecular level. The course will stress topics that include structure and functions of endocrine glands in a traditional way and also the molecular aspects of hormone action, including hormone-receptor interactions, second messenger generation, gene regulation of hormones, and related topics.

Course Learning Outcomes

The student should be able to:

• understand the function of the endocrine organs, metabolism of their hormones, and their effects on the body.

•  understand molecular and cellular mechanisms of hormones.

• interpret the scientific data of stimulation and suppression of glands.

• know the use of insulin, thyroid hormones, corticosteroids, androgens, estrogens, vasopressin, and other agents on the activation of gene expression.

• interaction of the endocrine system with other systems such as nervous and immune systems.

• understanding on the endocrionopathology.
