Course Objectives

At the end of this course, students will…
- Become familiar with different text genres (including newspapers,
magazines, academic journals, literary texts)
- Learn the relationship between lexical items and structural forms
through detailed analysis of reading texts.
- Examine the lexical items with a focus on prefixes and suffixes, phrasal
verbs, idioms, slang, and collocations in English.

Course Content

Developing further reading skills in understanding implications in a variety of text types; responding to ideas in texts, synthesizing information and implications in texts on the same topic and improving vocabulary development strategies with focus on different styles.


Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to…
- Identify the difference among different text genres (including
newspapers, magazines, academic journals, literary texts) in order to
comprehend the texts using top-down and bottom-up reading skills.
- Compare and contrast the texts published in newspapers, magazines,
academic journals, literary texts in terms of their structure, use of
vocabulary and style.

- Analyze the use of lexical items in different contexts
-Analyze the meaning differences between synonymous items and the change
in meaning depending on the context it is used.

- Identify the prefixes and suffixes in the vocabulary items to work on
their meaning.
- Analyze the use of idioms, phrasal verbs and collocations in texts of
different formality.
- Compare and contrast the use of items that are cognates in both English
and Turkish.
