Course Objectives

Participants in this course will learn:

  • trends and principles underpinning historical and current approaches, methods and techniques in English language teaching
  • sociocultural, psychological, and political variables to facilitate the process of teaching and learning English
  • ELT methodology and contextual variables in making pedagogical decisions and implementations

Course Content

Analyzing major approaches, methods, and techniques of English language teaching. Including the linguistic and psychological theories behind them and practical applications of techniques for teaching various language skills, including listening and speaking, grammar, vocabulary, and reading and writing.


Course Learning Outcomes

Participants successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of trends and principles underpinning a range of historical and current approaches, methods and techniques in English language teaching
  • establish a critical link between these principles and their impact and implications on classroom practices and English language learners
  • apply knowledge of sociocultural, psychological, and political variables to facilitate the process of teaching and learning English
  • pose new questions about relevant methodological issues in the field of ELT
  • apply their understanding of ELT methodology and contextual variables in pedagogical decisions and implementations
  • discuss various language teaching theories, issues and trends in teaching English
