Course Objectives
This course aims to introduce students to the cultural dimensions of language teaching through readings, discussion, and assignments. The major issues that class members will read and talk about include: discovering and defining ‘culture’ as a concept; culture in the teaching of English; culture in teaching materials; teacher knowledge of culture; and multicultural classrooms.
Course Content
Providing language teachers with a basis for introducing a cultural component into their teaching; significance of culture in teaching English as a foreign language; perspectives on how language and culture interact; and distinctions between understanding and participating in cultures.
Course Learning Outcomes
The students are expected to gain a broader sense of cultural issues in language teaching, awareness of the importance of culture, cultural differences, and cultural properties in learning and teaching.
