Course Objectives

Upon the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

- understand and discuss key topics, theoretical approaches and methods in the study of language contact situations.

- develop a broad perspective of the field of language contact including the study of language contact and its linguistic and sociolinguistic outcomes.

- develop methodologies to study language contact using an interdisciplinary approach.


Course Content

The course aims to introduce the study of language contact and its outcomes, as well as the social and linguaistic factors that regulate contact-induced change. The course covers concepts in language contact including bilingualism, code-switching and lexical borrowing, language change, contact and grammaticalization, language shift, language attrition, language death, pidgins and creoles formation.


Course Learning Outcomes

Students, who passed the course satisfactorily will be able to:

- show familiarity about the key topics, theoretical approaches and methods in the study of language contact situations.

- demonstrate a broad perspective of the field of language contact including the study of language contact and its linguistic and sociolinguistic outcomes.

- show familiarity with and apply the methodologies to study language contact using an interdisciplinary approach.
