Course Objectives

This course focuses on human language from a social and cultural perspective. The students are introduces to a variety of tools for linguistic analysis as well as detailed information about the founders, foundations, theories and frameworks developed in/related to the field of Sociolinguistics. The main aims of the course are to enable students to think critically, ask vital questions, work collaboratively and produce empirical research uncovering the multifaceted forms and functions of language in various social contexts. 


Course Content

A survey of sociolinguistic theories and research findings which illuminate the learning and use of English as a foreign language, with particular emphasis on practical applications.


Course Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to

*use linguistic terms and concepts related to sociolinguistics, cross-cultural communication and discourse analysis appropriately where/when necessary

*demonstrate an understanding of the basic aims and theories in Sociolinguistics

*demonstrate an understanding of the nature of sociolinguistic data and data collection and analysis techniques, and the way in which these differ from data and methodologies in other areas of Linguistics

*provide a reasoned and structured analysis of various pieces of texts, drawing out the features which are typical of the specific genre

*demonstrate a sound understanding of how meaning is expressed in a text taking into account its purpose and context
