Course Objectives

This course aims at familiarising students in the following areas:

  • The political and intellectual roots of ELT
  • Social, economic and cultural influences on ELT
  • The impact of current theories and research findings on classroom practices
  • Current perspectives on teaching and learning English
  • The Impact of technology and digitalisation on learning and teaching languages
  • The role of AI in TESOL

Course Content

Concerns of the language teaching profession worldwide as currently being discussed and debated in professional literature. The political and intellectual roots of ELT, social, economic and cultural influences on ELT, the debate over communicative language teaching, and the relation of current theory and research to actual classroom practice.

By the end of the course students will be able to understand

  • The impact of current theories and research findings on classroom practices
  • Current perspectives on teaching the four skills and grammar
  • evaluate what they read on ELT world literature more critically
  • analyze their teaching context in connection with the existing theories and approaches in applied linguistics
  • approach their language teaching practices more realistically
  • find solutions for their ELT related problems
