Course Objectives

At the end of this course the students will

learn the development of literary/critical theory from Classical Antiquity to the early Twentieth Century.

have a better understanding of discussions concerning the nature of literature/art and major issues concerning literary criticism/theory.


Course Content

This is the course that concentrates on the development of Literary Theory from the Classical Age of Greece to the Modern Period. The approach used is historical as well as conceptual. Major texts necessary for an understanding of modern criticism are read and discussed. The focus is on the theoretical aspect. Practical criticism is not a part of this course.

At the end of this course students will be able to

discuss the development of literary/critical theory from Classical Antiquity to the early Twentieth Century.

identify different literary/critical approaches as reflections or products of the larger schools, movements or periods they belong to.

compare and contrast literary/critical approaches belonging to the same or different historical periods.

identify and discuss the major issues, questions and problems concerning literary theory and criticism.
