Course Objectives
To gain a deep familiarity with all aspects of the literary texts studied.
To improve students' abilities to analyse the texts critically, analytically, thematically and with reference to a variety of theorised approaches.
To gain an awareness of the historical embeddedness of these texts, both in terms of how students respond to earlier works, and in terms of how they influence or foreshadow later works.
Course Content
Representative works and genres are studied in the context of the social and intellectual trends of the period. (Works to be selected from Pope, Dryden, Swift, Johnson, Fielding, Defoe, etc.)
Course Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to discuss, write extended papers and presentations, and answer exam questions about Restoration and Eighteenth Century literary texts, to an advanced (MA) level.
