Course Objectives
This course aims to
- explore the major literary productions of the Middle Ages with a perspective towards the social, religious and cultural contexts of the time.
- provide a good grounding in the major authors and prevalent themes and concerns of Medieval literature.
Course Content
Representative texts are used to study the courtly love and romance traditions, verse romances and Medieval drama.
Course Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to
- make a scholarly discussion of the main themes of literature in the Middle Ages and relate these to the social, political and religious circumstances of the time.
- identify major authors and works of the Middle Ages.
- analyze Medieval literary works by paying attention to their contexts as well as the generic and stylistic qualities of the works in question.
