Course Objectives

At the end of this course, the student will learn:

recurring thematic concerns and formal characteristics of the novels written in Britain in the second half of the twentieth century.

major aesthetic, philosophical, cultural and political contexts informing the novels written in Britain in the second half of the twentieth century.


Course Content

Works of significant novelists from the thirties through the Post-War period to the present day will be studied.


Course Learning Outcomes

The student who passed the course satisfactorily will be able to:

identify major themes and formal features of post-war and late twentieth-century British novel.

to compare and contrast post-war and late twentieth-century British novel with the novels written in Britain earlier in the century in terms of form and content.

will be able to outline the major lines of critical argument around the selected novels.

will be able to analyze the relationships between form and content in the selected novels.

will be able to compose a critical essay on at least one of the novels studied in class.
