Course Objectives

Understanding of advanced power electronics issues on switches, topologies, switching patterns, control methods, and converter design.

Power semiconductor switches, their types, structures, ratings, important parameters, static and dynamic characteristics will be comprehended.

Power converter topologies and switching methods for high performance power conversion systems are learned. Their control structures and implementations are investigated.


Course Content

Modern power semiconductors characteristics, trends. Power integrated circuits. AC-to DC converters; unity power factor converters. DC- to DC converters; switch mode power converters, resonant converters, DC-to AC converters; configurations, soft switching, resonant types, pulse width modulation techniques. A review of selected applications.


Course Learning Outcomes

Student, who passed the course satisfactorily will be able to:

  • Evaluate the performance of power semiconductors, select their ratings and driving methods.
  • Analyze the behavior of and investigate the performance of any power converter topology by means of analysis, simulations, modelling etc.
